2024 Highlights!
Events and Recordings
This past year, eLabs hosted 16 events and recordings, including:
- Tool Demonstrations: Showcasing how to utilize advanced tools for documentary editing and digital publishing.
- Webinars: Engaging audiences with discussions on editing techniques, methodologies, and best practices.
- Discussions & Project Deep Dives: Offering a closer look into ongoing projects and the impactful work of digital editors.
These events allowed us to connect with our community, share expertise, and foster a deeper understanding of the importance of documentary editing/recovery.
Conference Engagement
In 2024, we presented about eLabs or hosted workshops at 6 major conferences. These opportunities amplified our mission, introduced eLabs to new audiences, and reinforced our role as a leader in the field of digital editing/recovery education.
Popular Courses
Our courses continued to thrive, with 120 users currently enrolled in various offerings. The two standout courses of the year were:
- Why Edit?: This course provides a general framework for exploring the field of editing, such as the reasons why you may choose to edit, the differences between historical editing and critical editing, and some of the activities and considerations involved in preparing an edition.
- What Will Your Edition Look Like?: Editors publish documents in a variety of formats, ranging from books to websites to datasets. Some editions focus on providing the reader with as close to the experience of using the original document as possible, while others try to create a version of it that is broadly accessible.

As we move into 2025, we’re excited to build on this momentum. Here’s a preview of our goals and initiatives:
Expanding Community Outreach
We’re committed to reaching a broader audience by:
- Partnering with organizations and institutions to promote awareness of documentary editing and recovery.
- Hosting more interactive workshops and open sessions to engage directly with our community.
Growing Our Social Media Presence
Social media will be a key focus for us this year as we:
- Launch a new blog series to showcase behind-the-scenes work, highlight projects progress, and share tips for digital editing and more.
- Encourage dialogue through Slack, Instagram, Bluesky and collaborative discussions on course pages.
What’s Coming Next
- New Courses: We’re in the process of developing fresh courses to meet the evolving needs of our users.
- Enhanced Tools: Stay tuned for updates to our platform, making it even easier to learn, collaborate, and create impactful editions as a practitioner.
- Collaborative Projects: We’re planning partnerships with other leaders in digital humanities to create innovative learning opportunities and resources.
