Caring for Community Collections: Insights from Working with the Seizo Oka Collection at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California

February 19, 2024 11:30 am 12:30 pm EST

In 2019, the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) began digitizing a rare collection of records that documents the lives of Issei (first-generation Japanese Americans) in San Francisco. This initiative not only marked the opening of the community’s access to these fragile records, but also launched a major renovation effort to the JCCCNC’s archival space. Since then, the JCCCNC has worked hard to re-envision their archives and prepare these materials with the local community in mind—from cataloging the digitized records for community use, to pursuing mold remediation and adapting their facilities for long-term archival preservation, to producing a mural illustrating the history of Japanese Americans in San Francisco.

On Februrary 19, 2024, during a recorded webinar hosted by eLaboratories, Diane Matsuda of the JCCCNC detailed her work with these materials and on the forthcoming digital collection.
